FOR STORY WRITERS

Story Writers Needed!

Sylvan Lake Theatre needs your Sylvan Lake story.

Do you have a really great story to share about Sylvan Lake? We would like to hear about a remarkable or hilarious experience or memory that you, your family or someone you know has had. Do you have an elder with a story that needs telling?

Sylvan Lake Theatre’s Call for Stories is open to residents of Central Alberta or past Sylvan Laker’s whose hearts still remain here.

We always need local stories and storytellers.

Since 2022 the Sylvan Lake Theatre has been bringing people together for storytelling circles and workshops. Our storytellers have been hired to present at conferences, as well as special events for Christmas and Halloween. We collect stories year-round and especially Sylvan Lake themed stories that we can use for the annual Theatre Trail.

What we are looking for

We’d like the story to be true, connected to the town of Sylvan Lake and approximately 400-500 words. It should take about three minutes to read or tell.  A story needs a beginning, middle and end with one main character that experiences something worth telling about. There may be other people and side plots that enrich the story. Sylvan stories do not have to be historic stories. It could have happened last century or last week!

The hardest thing in writing any story, especially a true and personal one, is that much has to be left out so that the story stands strong on its own and can be meaningful to all who will hear it.

How to submit your story

You can email us your typed story, or we would be happy to come and record you telling your story and save you the typing.

What is Theatre Trail?

It’s a triple Gold Winner voted Best Summer Event 2023, 2024, 2025

The Sylvan Lake Theatre Trail is an immersive theatrical experience that brings audiences to various locations to enjoy short, entertaining performances of new plays. Our comedies, romances and dramas integrate uniquely with each specific shop or business creating an engaging experience that attracts audiences year after year.

Guiding the audience groups are the Storytellers who share the newsy, mysterious and humorous stories about Sylvan Lake’s past and present on the trail.

Choosing Stories for Theatre Trail

JULY 30 is the annual deadline for stories for the Theatre Trail. Once all stories have been read, we will contact the writers of the ones selected for the current theatre trail.

Please be aware that stories may be edited for length or context and personalized by the storyteller who shares the story with the audience. It’s a collaboration.

The writers of the Theatre Trail stories will be contacted for permission to use their stories and recognised in our media campaigns, included in the online event program and on the billboard in our trail lobby. They will receive two tickets to the Theatre Trail and be invited to a Launch Party as part of the cast & crew.
